Damn...
And it’s far from the first time or the last time.

Hate to think how many of these were young people who didn’t make the choice to go there on their own...

How many times did your parents take you somewhere you didn’t want to go?

I know. I just don’t know what the tradition is for the pilgrimage. May be only for those over a certain age.

It’s my understanding that it’s the duty of every adult Muslim to make the Hadj once in his/her lifetime. I have no idea if the children tag along with their parents, or if it’s only adults.

They NY TIMES article keeps describing it as a stampede. But what caused that? I don’t see how some people not following the entrance guidelines causes this to happen. You don’t casually stampede that many people to death.

I’m sure we’ll know more about what caused it before long.

No word on the cause except that there was a sudden surge in the crowd. That’s all it takes for everyone to panic without actually knowing if there’s a problem.
This has also apparently happened many times in the past. There’s probably that one idiot that instigates the whole thing “just to see” if they can make it happen again.

Thankfully (?) most of the images I’ve seen seem to be adults. Hard to even think about looking at any positives (wrong word - less negatives?) in this...

Something about more people than expected, and a push from the back. Once the first person falls, there’s no way to get that many people to stop moving forward.

And how long ago was it when that crane fell over on a bunch of worshippers? A week or so ago?

Not sure how long ago, but yeah. Ugh.

IT doesn’t take a lot for people in a crowd to start pushing, panic and have it turn into a route.
back in the 70’s I had family on vacation in Mexico city, there was an event going on an one of the roads was blocked off. Except people kept coming and pushing into this street, crushing those in front. Then the baricade broke down and everyone just started running.
